Steadfast in the Storm: Learning to Trust God When Life Feels Overwhelming

Updated: Jun 1

We just wrapped up our series on Identity in Christ, and now we’re stepping into something we all face — life’s storms. Whether you’re coming out of one, smack in the middle of one, or about to enter one, this series is for you. Over the next six weeks, we will talk about what it looks like to trust God in the storm, starting with this first teaching: Steadfast in the Storm.

God Is Present in Your Storm

Let’s start with the truth: God is your refuge and strength. He is a very present help in trouble.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” – Psalm 46:1

We broke down that word present. He’s not far off. He’s not distant. He is actively with you, fully aware, all-powerful, and already working. Even when it feels like the waves keep crashing, He is right there in the boat with you.

I always think about that story in Mark where the storm raged and Jesus said, “Peace, be still.” He’s still speaking that today.

When Storms Hit, What’s Your First Instinct?

For me? I’ve always been a runner. When things get hard, I want to shut down, isolate, and avoid the pain. I don’t like confrontation. I’ve struggled with that my whole life. But God has been teaching me that you can’t run from storms but can stand in them — with Him.

And in that standing, we grow. We learn endurance. We learn trust. We learn that even when life slams us with wind and waves, we are anchored in a God who doesn’t move.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10

This isn’t a suggestion. It’s a command. Be still even when chaos surrounds you, even when fear wants to take over. Be still and know — He’s still on the throne.

God Is Your Shield

I picture a shield when I think of who God is during my storms, like a big, strong, immovable wall between me and every fiery dart coming my way.

That image hits deep for me. I wasn’t protected as a child. I grew up in pain, with a silenced voice, but now I know: God shields me. He covers me. He takes the hit for me. That doesn’t mean I don’t feel the impact — but it means I’m not alone in it.

“You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word.” – Psalm 119:114

He is that protective covering we longed for. He’s the Father who doesn’t walk away when things get hard.

Storms Are Part of Our Sanctification

Let’s be real: no one likes trials. No one likes suffering. But God uses every storm for our good and His glory. Just look at Job — everything he walked through is still ministering to us today. Your storm has eternal value.

“...we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character...” – Romans 5:3-4

Whether your storm is grief, betrayal, financial hardship, or spiritual attack, God is refining you and making you more like Jesus. You’re not being punished—you’re being shaped.

Anchored in Christ, Unmoved by the Wind

At the end of the week, we studied Hebrews 6:19:

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”

Storms will come. That’s not a maybe — that’s a promise. But if you’re anchored in Christ, you don’t have to be tossed around by every wave. You won’t drift. He holds you firm.

Being still isn’t weakness. It takes strength to plant yourself in the truth of God’s Word, to say, “I will praise You in this storm.”

Conclusion: Let Peace Rule

Sister, you are not forgotten in your storm.

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts...” – Colossians 3:15

Let Him reign. Let His peace rule. Don’t let fear, anxiety, or doubt take over. The Prince of Peace has given you the gift of peace.

This storm won’t last forever. But what you gain in it — deeper faith, stronger endurance, a greater love for God — will last for eternity.

Please reach out if you need prayer, encouragement, or someone to talk to. You’re not alone, and you’re not bothering me. This walk is better when we do it together.

Let me pray over you: Father, for the sister reading this who’s in the middle of her storm — wrap her in Your peace. Anchor her heart in You. Remind her she is held, she is seen, and she will not be shaken. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next Week: We’ll continue with Week 2 in our Trusting God in the Storm series. If you’re not already in the Sisterhood Facebook Group, join us! Or follow along here for weekly blog summaries and devotional encouragement.

Let’s keep trusting — even in the storm. ⛈️
