You Are Not a Mistake: Discovering Your Identity in Christ

Updated: Apr 14

You were not an accident. You are not a random collection of DNA or a product of circumstance. According to Scripture, you are God’s workmanship — His poiēma — a term that means masterpiece or poetry.

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. "Ephesians 2:10
That means you were made with intention, detail, and divine purpose. You are not a mistake; you are a masterpiece.

And even if your life has felt messy, painful, or broken, none of it is wasted. God is still writing something beautiful.

Masterpiece, Not a Mess

Many of us have asked, "How could God use me after everything I’ve done?” Maybe you’ve looked at your past — the broken relationships, the bad choices, the trauma you’ve endured — and thought it disqualified you. But God is not afraid of your mess.

In fact, He specializes in transforming it. That same word, workmanship, or masterpiece in Greek, poiēma, gives us our word poem. God is writing a redemptive story out of your life. Even when it feels like chaos, He sees the whole canvas. He knows what He’s doing.

The parts of your story you wish you could erase might be the parts He plans to redeem and use for His glory.

Purpose Over Performance

We live in a world that screams, “Do more. Be more. Prove yourself.” But the gospel offers something radically different: an identity that isn’t earned but received.

God didn’t create you to strive for acceptance. He created you from a place of acceptance. He prepared good works in advance — not to win His approval, but because you already have it in Christ.

You weren’t made to hustle for worth. You were made to walk in purpose.

What Does That Mean for You?

If you've ever struggled with shame, identity, or purpose, start here:

God made you on purpose. God loves you without condition. And God plans to use you, not despite your past, but often because of what He’s redeemed in it.

Your worth is not based on your performance. It's based on the One who created you.

Questions to Reflect On

  • What is one thing I’ve believed about myself that doesn’t align with being God’s masterpiece?

  • What part of my story have I called a “mess” that God might call a “masterpiece”?

  • Where in my life am I striving for approval that God has already given me?

Final Thoughts

You are not too far gone, and you are not beyond hope. You were created with a divine purpose, and the Master Artist is writing your story.

Let go of the lies that say you’re worthless. Let go of the pressure to perform. Step into the truth that you were made for good works — and they’re already waiting for you to walk in them.

Because you are not a mistake. You are God’s masterpiece. And that changes everything.
